Graduate Teaching Assistant Information

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) play an integral role at KU. All new GTAs must complete a mandatory training program. Follow the links above for more information about training, to find important information and forms related to your appointment, and to locate resources useful to GTAs in working with students.

Mandatory Training for Graduate Teaching Assistants

All new GTAs must complete all components of the GTA training program.

This training consists of BOTH an on-line tutorial AND training program sessions:
  • Mandatory Online Tutorial & Training Program Sessions
    • The tutorial is completed via Blackboard. All new GTAs will receive an email from the Office of Graduate Studies as they are enrolled in the tutorial with information on accessing the tutorial and the deadline for completion. Tips on logging into blackboard are found in this pdf document.

New GTAs in the departments of Communication Studies, English, and French & Italian complete a training program provided by their department. All other GTAs must attend the New GTA Conference and a follow-up session hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence in addition to any departmental training sessions required by the teaching department.

The Center for Teaching Excellence New GTA Conference is scheduled as follows for the 2012-2013 academic year:
Fall Semester: August 13th, 2012 8:00 am, Budig Hall
Spring Semester: January 16th, 2013 8:00 am, Budig Hall

Appointment Information for Graduate Teaching Assistants

  • Mandatory Training
    • All new GTAs must complete all components of the GTA training program. See the information above for details.
  • Background Check
    • Background checks are required for all prospective or rehired (break in service for one year or more) GTA or positions. Background checks conducted by Federal Homeland Security for international, non-citizens as part of the visa process will be adequate if the candidate has not been in the U.S. for 30 days or longer. Additional information may be found at: https://documents.ku.edu/policies/hreo/BackgroundCheck.htm
  • Benefits
    • Graduate teaching assistants are eligible for benefits, including tuition and health insurance benefits. Further information may be found in the Summary of Benefits Available to Graduate Teaching Assistants and Graduate Research Assistants.

Graduate teaching assistants may be eligible to defer tuition payments. Please read the memorandum from Diane Goddard, Vice Provost, Finance & Administration, for more information about tuition deferment. The deferment form is found here.

Information on the GTA/GRA Health Insurance Plan may be found here.

Information on insurance for F1 & J1 students may be found here.
