Graduate Student Video Contest

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies invites graduate students and graduate student organizations to share their graduate school experiences with us through our video contest. The theme of our contest is entitled “What does it mean to be a graduate student?” The goal of the video contest to is to portray the many facets of graduate student life. Our intent is to use the videos to highlight the importance of graduate education, recruit graduate students and promote the University. Students can submit videos highlighting everything from their research and teaching to their community work and social activities. 

We ask that students understand the rules and regulations of this contest:

  1. Have fun and be creative while producing the video.
  2. The video should be no more than three minutes long. Video should be able to play on Windows Media format.
  3. The video should be submitted on a disk to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, Room 213 Strong Hall. Submissions must be received no later than 4:30 pm on February 10, 2010.
  4. The Office of Research and Graduate Studies plans to utilize selected entries for publicity purposes.  All submissions will be retained by the University of Kansas for distribution or publication in print or digital form at any time.
  5. If you have questions, call the Office of Research and Graduate Studies at 785-864-8040 or email us at graduate@ku.edu.

Prizes will be awarded. The first place winner will receive $500; the second place winner will receive $300; and the third place winner will receive $200. Contact the Office of Research and Graduate Studies for more details. A flyer may be downloaded here.

Graduate Student Organizations: Coffee with the Dean

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies is happy to introduce a new program called “Coffee with the Dean.” This program provides graduate students an opportunity to meet with Dean Sara Rosen to discuss topics that affect them. Members of Graduate Student Organizations are invited to share their questions with Dean Rosen in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Workshop

This workshop is for any student who will be submitting a thesis or dissertation. It covers the process of submitting electronic theses and dissertations online at KU and the steps leading up to submission, including formatting your thesis/dissertation, getting the title and acceptance pages signed and turned in, paying fees, deciding whether to register your copyright, dealing with supplementary files, and making a PDF version of your thesis/dissertation to submit. Co-sponsored by Graduate Studies and the Libraries. Registration is not required.

Electronic Transcripts: Informational Brown Bag Session for Students, Staff, and Faculty

The Office of Graduate Studies and the Registrar's Office will co-host a brown bag workshop on electronic transcripts.

Electronic transcripts are now available from KU, and representatives from the Registrar's Office will explain how students can use this new option and answer any questions. The Office of Graduate Studies will present on the use of electronic transcripts in the graduate admissions process here at KU.

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to bring a lunch and questions about electronic transcripts. Beverages and refreshments will be provided. Registration is not required.

EndNote X3: Libraries and Databases

In this 90-minute hands-on workshop, attendees will learn to import references from library databases and other online resources, and organize those references within an EndNote library and add attachments.

Mock Interview Clinic

This event is a fun opportunity to develop your interviewing skills and learn helpful tips and tricks from interviewing "experts". Staff from various KU career and student service offices will lead small groups of students through an overview of effective interview techniques and give feedback as students practice answering basic interview questions. To help you prepare for the event, please download and review the interviewing handout at the bottom of this page.

Attendance for this event will be capped at 30 students - please register to attend and reserve your spot by visiting this site.

Students are asked to wear business-casual attire to this event. Please do not wear jeans or sweats!

ETS Personal Potential Index Brown Bag Lunch Session

Join the Office of Research and Graduate Studies for a brown bag lunch on Educational Testing Service’s (ETS) new service, Personal Potential Index. To help students, faculty, and staff with the PPI, we are offering information on this new testing service which could become more popular in the upcoming years:

Annual Graduate Student Research Competition

Graduate students are invited to participate in the annual Graduate Student Research Competition on March 31, 2010. The Office of Research and Graduate Studies is delighted to support this Graduate and Professional Association event by providing awards. Information on abstract submission will be posted here when available.

DOCTORAL HOODING CEREMONY

Each year, Graduate Studies celebrates the accomplishments of graduating doctoral students with the annual doctoral hooding ceremony.  All August and December 2009 and May 2010 doctoral degree candidates are invited to attend the formal doctoral hooding ceremony in May. More information will be available here in January of 2010.  Only doctoral candidates who have satisfied all of their degree requirements by the date established by Graduate Studies as its deadline for graduation in May will be allowed to participate in the May Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.  We are confident that this ceremony, marking as it does the culmination of your academic career, will prove to be memorable for you.

Kansas Association of Planning Students, Fall 2009 Brown Bag Series

The Kansas Association of Planning Students (KAPS) invites interested graduate students to attend the Fall 2009 Brown Bag Series. The series brings experts from disciplines outside planning or with hands-on planning experience. While  the topics will be of particular interest to the study of urban planning, featured topics will focus on issues of importance across a number of fields of study. Anyone interested in the topic of the day is encouraged to attend to listen and take part in discussion with these experts.
