2012 Graduate Student Research Competition

The 2012 Graduate Student Research Competition will occur from 1:00 - 4:30 pm in the Kansas Union. A full schedule and a list of presenters and abstracts is available here.

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies invites graduate students to apply to participate in the 2012 Graduate Research Competition, which will be on March 7, 2012. The competition is a campus-wide event focusing on graduate student research and provides graduate students the opportunity present their research to faculty judges and peers from across the University. Students can apply to give a poster presentation or an oral presentation. Prizes will be awarded by Research and Graduate Studies.

Applicants with oral presentations in the social/behavioral/physical/biological sciences or engineering may also elect to participate in the Sigma Xi Research  competition.  Participants will be judged during their presentations and the top three early (master’s candidate or doctoral student who has not passed preliminary/comprehensive exams) and the top three advanced (doctoral student who has passed preliminary/comprehensive exams) graduate students will receive either a first, second, or third-place plaque.  All participants in the Sigma Xi competition will receive one free year of membership in the KU Chapter of Sigma XiSigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society whose mission is to enhance the health of the research enterprise, foster integrity in science and engineering, and promote the public's understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition. 

Nonparticipants, both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, are encouraged to attend. Attendees will be exposed to the breadth and depth of the research being pursued across the University and have networking opportunities.

The program features the following activities for students:

goHow do you determine the winners of the Graduate Student Research Competition?
Faculty members from various departments generously donate their time to judge the student presentations. Student will be judged on their knowledge of the research topic, the clarity and effectiveness of delivery, and the organization and completeness of the presentation.

If you need help writing the abstract, consider visiting the KU Writing Center or attending the Abstract Writing Workshop.
